A Carpenter’s Songs: Poetry & Photography by Daniel Greene Smith

A Carpenter’s Songs is the story of 20 years in the life of one carpenter. The book begins in his first weeks as an apprentice, moves on through the war with his father, on to his first love, and to his understanding of the loss of his father, and his first love, and more. As you turn each page you are walking along with him through the moments of his life.

Each poem is a snapshot in time along his path as he grows older, and the poetry and the photography tie in and reflect each other, augment each other. The two together become a third thing that is more expressive and concise than either could be alone.

Daniel Greene Smith grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and attended the Putney School in 1983 in Vermont. He came to Madison in 1990 where he attended the University of Wisconsin, and majored in Philosophy and English. He Graduated from UW Madison in 1995, and was The University’s Felix Pollack Award Winner in Poetry that year for A Carpenter’s Songs.

Featured Forum Thread: another day done

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

theBubbler Member “j10asen” posts a thread titled:

another day done

another day done
he marks his time
another day done
and it was a grind

another day past
without hope
another day yet
he managed to cope

just yesterday all was fine
he found a way to unwind
but that was the past
and this is now
everything has changed
he doesn’t know how

somewhere along the line
he became obsolete
but he did not pay it any mind
yet tried to compete

Amazon Item of the Week: Letters to a Young Poet

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Letters to a Young Poet

It would take a deeply cynical heart not to fall in love with Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet. At the end of this millennium, his slender book holds everything a student of the century could want: the unedited thoughts of (arguably) the most important European poet of the modern age. Rilke wrote these 10 sweepingly emotional letters in 1903, addressing a former student of one of his own teachers. The recipient was wise enough to omit his own inquiries from the finished product, which means that we get a marvelously undiluted dose of Rilkean aesthetics and exhortation.

Featured Classified: Bamboo Souls Book of Poetry

My poem entitled “WAR” was accepted and published in this recently released book. I don’t make anything from the sale of this book but it is a worthy cause, and a very good group.

Poets of any religion, nationality, creed, race or culture were invited to contribute to the creation of a poetry compilation book project based upon a theme of “peace, tranquility or harmony.” The 47 poems selected from poets in 9 countries offer a diverse insight into the way artists of many ages, shapes, sizes, viewpoints and geographies may share a common theme of considering a better world through the words of poetry.

Featured Forum Thread: Indian Gaming

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

theBubbler Member “Rex” posts a thread titled:

Indian Gaming

Govenor Doyles compacts were recently declared void by the state supreme court, public opinion supported this also.

However public opinion supports Indian gaming in Wisconsin. what’s your opinion?

Personaly, I know it’s here to stay. Even if we don’t allow Class111 gaming, we basically have no say in the rest. (bingo) I would like to see compacts that favor the taxpayers better. 25% of net profits is a reachable goal. Most states have between 8-16% share of net profits. There are a few compacts that equal 25%.

I don’t frequent Indian gaming, again that’s just a personal quirk. If they were on equal footing with other businesses, I would, but as long as they have an unfair advantage over other businesses, they won’t get my money. I travel to out of state gaming facilities if I want to gamble.

What’s your opinion?
