Good subject. I believe that the companies whe get the raw (recycled) materials from consumers should contribute financially to the effort.

The financial incentive for the company I work at is this: Anything going to the landfill is charged by the pound. So the less going to the landfill, the less we pay. So we collect recyclables simply as a way not to pay to go to the dump.

Consumers need to have a financial incentive to recycle as well.

When we go to our local dump weekly, we have to sort, clean and seperate recyclables from common trash. What makes us do it? It’s the rules for our dump. Do we occasionally sneak some recyclable material in with the regular trash? Yep. Why? Because it’s easier. What would make us 100% compliant? Money. If we had to repay a deposit on materials or got paid per pound for materials, we’d surely do better. Somebody is getting the material we’re sorting and getting something for it.

How many plastic bottles from the now poplar bottled water (paying for water is another subject I’ll tackle later) end up in the landfills. The majority I’m sure. Maybe that’s a good start for deposits on bottles. I kind of like that idea.

Posted: Wed Jul 04, 2007 1:36 pm

I’m sending out this note to reinforce the information regarding ticks and Lyme disease. There have been reports that folks are encountering a large numbers of ticks while outdoors. News media has also picked up on this, and I’ve read that the experts attribute the high number of wood ticks and Lyme disease cases reported this year to Wisconsin’s large deer population. Lyme disease is the most frequently reported tick-borne illness in the United States according to CDC.

The best protection from ticks is to avoid areas where there are high numbers of ticks found. But if avoiding these areas is not an option, use clothing, insect repellent, and tick checks to prevent tick bites. Take a look at the Centers for Disease Control website below for more information.

However public opinion supports Indian gaming in Wisconsin. what’s your opinion?

Personaly, I know it’s here to stay. Even if we don’t allow Class111 gaming, we basically have no say in the rest. (bingo) I would like to see compacts that favor the taxpayers better. 25% of net profits is a reachable goal. Most states have between 8-16% share of net profits. There are a few compacts that equal 25%.

I don’t frequent Indian gaming, again that’s just a personal quirk. If they were on equal footing with other businesses, I would, but as long as they have an unfair advantage over other businesses, they won’t get my money. I travel to out of state gaming facilities if I want to gamble.

This is the time of year I receive calls from frantic people who have stumbled across wildlife babies in their yards, attics, sheds, garages and yards.

Rehabbers are contacted through out the spring because they have found baby animals and assume that they need human help because the mother is nowhere in sight. Most people have very good intentions, BUT human intervention can result in orphaned wildlife.

In response to the article appearing in most major newspapers across the country concerning the $8.4 billion profit reported by Exxon. Concern over profits by this oil company has brought about accusations of gouging the American consumer. According to the article, “CEOs from Exxon and its industry peers have already appeared twice at Senate hearings and were asked to justify their profits shortly after reporting them to shareholders.” This has to be an American first. I have never heard of a company being called to justify it’s profits. One wonders if an extension of this idea could be made to other companies in other industries as well.

Per the article, “Lawmakers believe the profits are made on the backs of consumers who are paying a national average of $2.91 a gallon – 68 cents more than last year. Exxon says a strong commodities market combined with fortuitous planning and prudent management are producing record numbers.” This should make Americans ask the fu!
ndamental question: what is the difference between what a public non-profit utility company provides and what a private for-profit oil company provides? Afterall, they both sell energy to all United States citizens. The difference is that natural gas and electricity are sold in the form of a public good whereas oil is sold in the form of a private good. Accordingly, on the grounds of promoting national security, the United States Congress should convert all oil companies to utility companies. This would eliminate the windfall profits and force the oil industry to earn just enough income to cover operating expenses just as natural gas and electric utility companies are required to do. The resulting drop in gasoline prices would further stimulate the economy and lighten the energy stranglehold upon the United States by the Middle East. It would also eliminate the influence of the oil lobby. In this case, desperate times call for deliberate measures.
